Pask proposes cybernetics not as a collection of technical tricks for architects but as an architectural theory grounded in control, communication and system. Buildings and cities are understood as active systems whose organisation can be described through feedback, self-organisation and evolution. The architect’s task consequently shifts toward defining constraints, materials, interactions and modes of development rather than fixing a final state. Pask insists that systems such as cities grow and evolve, and that responsible design should contain rules for evolution. A reactive environment must also specify what it can learn and how it will adapt, establishing a reciprocal relation in which inhabitants influence the environment that in turn conditions them. The operative contribution is feedback. Time and use become internal components of design rather than external events occurring after completion.
