Ideas rarely remain the exclusive work of the person who first names them. One researcher may introduce a distinction, another clarify its mechanism, a third translate it, another operationalize it experimentally, and later communities may transform it beyond what its originator anticipated. Conventional citation can describe portions of this history, but the dominant model still imagines attribution primarily through documents with relatively stable author lists, while conceptual circulation is far less tidy. It requires distinguishing origin from development, development from application, application from translation, and translation from later reinterpretation. These differences matter because attribution is not a single relation. To originate a term is not the same intellectual act as demonstrating its usefulness; to translate a concept is not equivalent to reproducing it; to contest a framework may substantially reshape its subsequent meaning; to build an empirical method around a theoretical distinction creates another form of contribution. A concept can therefore accumulate several kinds of intellectual agency without becoming anonymously collective. The challenge is to preserve distributed contribution while keeping genealogy visible, particularly in machine-mediated environments where formulations can circulate far from their originating citations. Once an idea becomes sufficiently recurrent, its source may disappear behind familiarity: what began as a specific proposition slowly acquires the appearance of common vocabulary. VoiceDelegation describes this passage of conceptual agency through different speakers and formats without requiring provenance to disappear. Granular provenance could counter this by representing distinct relations to conceptual objects—introduced by, revised by, translated by, applied by, criticized by, independently extended by—without replacing conventional citation or documentary authorship. Such an architecture might also correct the persistent tendency of intellectual history to privilege singular invention. Concepts frequently emerge from networks of precursors, conversations, practices and adjacent traditions even when one formulation supplies the moment at which they become clearly recognizable. Attribution should therefore be precise enough to respect different acts of contribution without dissolving responsibility into generalized influence. Distributed authorship describes a condition in which concepts acquire several legitimate contributors while retaining traceable origins and transformations. The result lies between proprietary authorship and anonymous collective production: a relational account of intellectual labour in which the different acts through which an idea becomes possible, durable and useful can remain visible. Authorship then becomes not only a name attached to a document but a structured history of participation in the life of an intellectual object.
