IN SEPTEMBER 1968, SMITHSON PUBLISHED THE ESSAY "A SEDIMENTATION OF THE MIND: EARTH PROJECTS" IN ARTFORUM THAT PROMOTED THE WORK OF THE FIRST WAVE OF LAND ART ARTISTS, AND IN 1969 HE BEGAN PRODUCING LAND ART PIECES.
